These are my Penguin book covers for the book titles ‘Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit’ and ‘Carrie’s War’. The Penguin Design Award is an opportunity for students on a Degree or HND Art or Design course to design book jackets and win a work placement within the Penguin or Puffin design studio
This book cover is built upon brown parcel paper which is a visual metaphor of the journey the children took, who where sent away to the countryside. The protagonist Carrie is portrayed on the front cover cradling a skull. This reinforces one of the major themes, death.
This book cover uses negative space to play on the imagination of the viewer. This negative space is a visual metaphor of purity which contrasts against the coy red of the raincoat. The use of the bible reinforces the ideology of the theme religion within this novel.
